Thousands of protesters demonstrating against the escalating violence in Zimbabwe were met with tear gas and batons near tge capital. The protest was supposed to be peaceful with an appearance by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. However, when ordered to disperse by police officers the crowd refused. Police hurled canisters of tear gas and beat protesters with batons. They also arrested four people. President Robert Mugabe is accused by the Movement for Democratic Change of sending "thugs" to the rally.
